Fun Facts & State Emblems
A Few Facts About Marion County From the Indiana County History Preservation Society
  • Marion County is divided into 9 civil townships as follows:
Center, Decatur, Franklin, Lawrence, Perry, Pike, Warren, Washington and Wayne.
  • Marion County was created by an act of the Legislature on December 31, 1821, and began its formal existence April 1, 1822.
  • Indianapolis is the county seat as well as the state capitol.
  • The original courthouse, built in 1824, also served as the state capitol until 1835. This building was often used as a public hall,
and for many years was frequently used as a house of worship, until it was torn down in 1870 to make way for its replacement.
  • McCormick's Rock, located on the east bank of the White River, at White River State Park, commemorates the site of
John McCormick's cabin. He and two brothers with their families were the first European settlers of Indianapolis.
He was one of the first three county commissioners of Marion County and it was in his home that Indianapolis was chosen
state capital. The engineer who laid out the plans for Indianapolis stayed with John Wesley McCormick, Jr. to do his work.
  • Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis is the third largest non-government cemetery in the United States.
  • According to the Society of Indiana Pioneers, an individual was a pioneer of our county if they resided here on or before
    December 31, 1830.
  • Indiana automobile license plates issued in Marion County start with the prefix 49 because it is the forty-ninth county
    in alphabetical listing.
